The recently opened restaurant Contra is buzzing. Part of the excitement over the Lower East Side eatery is that the concept is new for New York. Deeply inspired by the neo-bistro movement in Paris, the small 44-seat Contra serves a different five-course set menu each night. Dishes are exuberantly experimental and extremely fresh, with many ingredients sourced that morning at Union SquareMarket by the two young rockstars in the kitchen, owner/chef Jeremiah Stone and Fabian von Hauske. Between the two, they’ve honed their skills and risk-taking aplomb at Jean-Georges, Isa, Chateaubriand in Paris, Fäviken inSweden, Attica in Melbourne and legendary Noma in Copenhagen.
$90 per seat. Includes a surprise tasting menu, wine pairing, tip and tax.
